EVS and Project Scotland

European Voluntary Service

The European Voluntary Service (EVS) provides young Europeans with the unique chance to express their personal commitment through unpaid and full-time voluntary activities in a foreign country within or outside the EU. In this way, it seeks to develop solidarity, mutual understanding and tolerance among young people, thus contributing to reinforcing social cohesion in the European Union and to promoting young people's active citizenship.
Open to all young people aged 18 to 30 EVS is a true 'learning service'. Beyond benefiting the local communities, by participating in voluntary activities, young volunteers can develop new skills and, therefore, improve their personal, educational and professional development. Volunteers can benefit from specific training throughout the activity and agree on their expected learning outcomes, processes and methods in advance.
We have a positive relationship with the EVS Team at the British Council and all our volunteers have made a meaningful contribution to the work of the project - here are some quotes:

"I am very satisfied with my project. The activities carried out met my expectations. I have learnt a lot and I feel I have grown both from a professional and personal point of view."

"This experience has improved my knowledge of all the many little differences between two European countries that make them different and unique. I would definitely recommend EVS to others because every experience abroad - especially a working one - makes you grow and broadens your horizons."

Project Scotland

Project Scotland helps young people realise their potential through volunteering. Many of the volunteers have changed their lives and aspirations through this project. Volunteering projects change lives and aspirations, giving an enormous boost to the capacity of the voluntary sector and local communities.
We have a positive relationship with the Project Scotland team and all our volunteers have made a meaningful contribution to the work of the project with one of our recent volunteers Euan being awarded a VOSCAR for this contribution to the work of the project.

Some quotes from Dave Lacey Project Manager at Good Food:
"Euan showed an ability to assist in prioritizing tasks. He was a 'whizz with the database' and a popular member of the team. Euan fully entered into his role as a peer mentor with the trainees and volunteers. He was readily accepted as a trusted person and this alloweded him to learn of issues around homelessness and social exclusion and the positive ways Cyrenians worked with individuals providing work experience and training."

"Zoe gave up her career in engineering finding that the "cash culture" of commerce did not equate to her vision of working to improve society. Assisting in the food redistribution operations she was given the role of identifying appropriate support and befriending opportunities for the vulnerable members of trainee and placement team. Zoe was also tasked to help recruit new volunteer drivers. To do this she contacted First Bus and Lothian Buses. As a result this Lothian Buses now have a recruiting policy for retiring bus drivers in Lothian Buses creating the opportunity to volunteer as drivers with the Good Food Programme."
