Food Redistribution
In doing this we -
- Save 9 tonnes of food each week that would otherwise go to landfill
- Allow our member agencies to reduce their own spending on food
- Increase the nutritional value of meals for homeless and socially excluded people
- Support our member agencies with advice and training on food safety and healthy eating.
Our food donors include: Marks & Spencer, Aldi, Wiseman Dairies, Greggs Bakery, Pret a Manger, Albert Bartlett & Sons, Kettle Produce, Fords Bakery.
Collecting, sorting and delivering this food safely and in time is no small job! Our small staff team includes a number of committed trainees and volunteers, who participate in all aspects of the process and contribute around 13,000 hours each year to the work of the project. Volunteers and trainees come from all walks of life and the depot offers a variety of opportunities and support to help homeless and socially excluded people.
Mike Pringle MSP is a supporter of the scheme and comments:
"Cyrenians do an incredible job in tackling food poverty head on by redistributing good food that would otherwise have ended up in landfill. I'm calling on the Scottish Government to back Cyrenians campaign to help those in food poverty through this recession and beyond."
